Wow! It's been ages since I've posted. Rest assured, I've been quite busy. Wrapped up a super fun year of art teaching and began another that's already off to a great start. Check out my Instagram (@Mr_See) to see some of my students' AMAZING artworks. I also took a couple unexpected turns in my art. For starters, I began working as a freelance graphic designer (stay tuned for future posts on that). I began a couple new illustration projects that are currently under wraps (updates to follow). And I started a super fun art commission project (again, not done so stay tuned for future updates).

Perhaps most exciting of all, I started a student rock band program! It just turned one year old! We started up in November of 2017 as sort of a fun after school youth empowerment activity that naturally followed after a summer of giving private guitar lessons. But it just snowballed. Now we've got a music video and a fresh, pro-quality rock song recording! We've got two student rock bands in the works with hopefully more to come! Check out my new YouTube channel for more!

Well hello! Just wanted to share some fun updates about my Summer of art-making. I've recently finished writing and begun illustrating two kids books: one about skateboarding and the other about a magical rainbow narwhal!

I was also recently scouted for FIXATE, an art showcase run by RAW Artists, an organization that helps up-and-coming artists gain exposure and opportunities. In order to be officially confirmed for the show, I need to sell four more tickets (buy yours here: http://www.rawartists.org/dcondry). I'll be selling art prints of my old favorite illustrations, plus some new pieces including the ones shown above. Even if you can't make the art show, it's still cool to buy a ticket just to support my entry. Hope to see you there!

You may recall how back in September, I visited a children's book writers and illustrators conference. There, I gained tons of great inspiration and technical tips to help further my work as an illustrator. One of my main takeaways was that I needed to start working in more horizontal compositions that allowed more space for text. Based on this advice, I created two sketches for illustrations that backers of my Kickstarter campaign have seen from start to finish. I just completed one of them and have started in on the next. See my progress above or read more about the project here!

The poetry for both of these illustrations was offered up by the one and only Jim Fitzpatrick, or James David Fitzpatrick as his pen name goes. He's an artist of various sorts, often creating multi-genre music of deep emotional resonance, though he's also an amazing poet. Pick up a copy of his poetry book here.
Happy Easter, y'all! If you read this blog, you probably know I barely update it. Maybe thrice per year? But from henceforth, you can see my art updates EVERY DAY on Instagram! Just follow me @map_of_dc. "M.A.P. of D.C." stands for "miscellaneous art projects of David Condry." Not only can you see my own artworks, like the sketchbook page above that I just posted today. You can also see images of my K5 art geniuses' artwork! It's been an amazing year of making and teaching art. Come check it out!

For the last couple years, I've been teaching art at an awesome elementary school. Above I've posted but a small selection from the many brilliant artworks created by my art geniuses. Here's to another great year of teaching! (Click one of the images to see all of them in a slideshow format)

I'm taking some new steps towards getting my illustrations out there! After chatting with a colleague, I was directed towards a certain children's literature conference where I might be able to meet an agent. The conference is this weekend and I'm ready to go. Having funded the entire experience with a recent Kickstarter campaign, I've got all my promotional materials ready. And based on information I gather this weekend regarding the children's literature market, I'll soon create another series of images to freshen up my portfolio. Pragmatically, the artwork will help hone my portfolio towards this desired market. For me personally, this artwork will give me the chance to vet some cherished new ideas with a broader creative community than I've taken part in hitherto. And for my Kickstarter backers, the new artwork will be available in a special high-resolution version. More updates to follow.

I'm a huge nerd. Having said that, I'm also extremely excited about this color wheel that I spent way too much time creating last night. The original is a relatively huge file (as I seldom work on projects to print 40 inches wide) and my computer struggled a bit. Save times lingered. But finally, I've got my space-themed color wheel, which goes with my overall space theme for the art classroom this school year. I'm really pumped about this poster because it demonstrates so many great elements and principles of art: complementary colors (via the adorable little rocket journeys portrayed), how to mix secondary colors (see, for example, how the orange planet has rings of red and yellow), tertiary colors, warm versus cool colors, and even shades and tints (seen in the modeling of the various planets).

I'm inordinately proud of this thing. I should probably sell repros of it on a teacher website or something. The above is a smaller version, but if you want the gigantic file to print out for your classroom or whatever, for now just email me and we'll work something out! D@dcondry.com, with "AWESOME PLANETARY COLOR WHEEL!" in the subject line. :-)

Here's something I've been working on for a while but never got around to posting. I call them "impossible objects." They're drawings done impulsively yet with conviction. Although depicting something unintelligible, I insist that these images do in fact depict. I try to exact the details, even shading, of whatever these things are. Perhaps they speak to the idea that the seemingly impossible does often actually make sense, just not at first glance or from a finite human standpoint.

Some of these drawings will serve as rewards for backers on my Kickstarter campaign (which ends tonight!). If you'd like a rare original one of these drawings, donate $25 or more here. Although I've already hit my goal, I thought I'd try and stretch a bit so I can get some new art supplies and become part of theispot.com, an online hub for illustrators looking to connect with potential clients.

The Kickstarter was super fun and will allow me to participate in an upcoming conference with the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. I'm hoping to make some good contacts there and thus connect my illustration work with the kid's book market. At very least, I'm going to turn the whole experience into a slew of new artwork, so keep your eyes open for related posts coming up!

This is the video I'm using to promote my very first Kickstarter campaign! In order to more accurately target the children's book market with some new portfolio pieces, my goal is to attend a particular conference that will provide relevant and very helpful insights, feedback, and networking. I'm raising about $500 to cover thee costs of the conference and some portfolio maintenance. Click here to visit the project on Kickstarter. Even if you can't donate, a "share" would be much appreciated! Thanks so much and take care!

My awesome business partner and co-collaborator Mary Huckstep has been working tirelessly to promote our recent book, Mary Mary Quite: On Raising Children (And Other Mind-Altering Substances). And her efforts have paid off! The book has won a number of awards, including one that I'm particularly proud of: the gold illustration award at Reader's Favorite! They have a page set up for our book here -- check it out! There's a brilliant review by Cheryl E. Rodriguez and a silver medal for non-fiction humor as well. The award ceremony is in Miami. Mary and I will both be there. We'll be further promoting the book of course, in part by handing out the above postcard that I designed during a snow day off of work (still teaching art and loving it!). And if you're in the area, we'll also be having a book signing a local bookstore called "The Bible Emporium" on Saturday, November 21st.

Happy Thanksgiving! This year, one thing I'm giving thanks for is "The Cannonball Flight," a new musical album release from long-time friend and creative co-collaborator, Albert Keever. I just finished the album art today. I'll update this post later when I find out when the release date is. Albert blends a lighthearted folk-rock style, some west coast flair, and heavy spiritual themes. I love his music and I love that my creative work and his have united!

The book is finished! I have finally completed all 21 illustrations for the forthcoming ebook, Mary Mary Quite: On Raising Children (and other mind-altering substances). If you'd like to meet the author, see the artwork in person, get your signed copy of a special print edition, or simply have a great time, come to the Glovinsky Gallery at the Santa Fe Art District in Denver on Friday, September 5th from 5 to 9pm. The gallery is at 800 West 8th Ave, Suite 116, Denver, CO 80204. And here's a fun little blurb about the event written up by the author of this hilarious-yet-insightful collection of mini-memoirs which I've had the pleasure of illustrating:

Funny, whimsical, clever, and occasionally profound -- such are the paintings and sketches David Condry created to illustrate Mary Huckstep's book of domestic humor, in their collaborative masterpiece, MARY MARY QUITE: On Raising Children (and other mind-altering substances). It's a collection of mini-memoirs on the fun and foibles of families. Come see for yourself! David Condry's process work and illustrations will be displayed from 5-9:00 pm, September 5th and 6th, in the Santa Fe Art District at the Glovinsky Gallery (800 West 8th Ave, Suite 116, Denver, CO 80204). There will be live music from Plainspeak, wine and nibbles, activities for the kids, and some special freebies. Buy a book, art print, or CD and get it signed by the author and artist. Meet this dynamic author-artist team and celebrate the launching of their first family-friendly, life-affirming book. Here are some updates on my experimental photo blog, where I have posted some recent successes with an ever-developing photo technique that involves impulsive light-writing and color-inverting the results so as to keep the negative image. All of the shots you see above are the "negatives," in the sense that the colors have been inverted: dark colors are light, warm colors are cool, blue is orange, red is green, and so forth. Over the last few months, I really feel this process has started to reach first signs of maturity, as I came across quite a crop of interesting, exciting images. Most of them are non-representational or non-pictorial in the sense that they depict nothing beyond the color, tone, shape, and line that one sees plainly within each composition. This does not, however, mean that they convey nothing besides those formal details. Rather, having less specificity, in terms of their referent, allows the pictures to convey a rather wide range of thoughts and feelings.

For a fuller grasp on what I'm trying to do with this images, check out my artist statement from the photo blog (which is lovingly dubbed "Purely Experimental Photography Produces Exciting Results," or "P.E.P.P.E.R." for short):

Recently, my own photography has consisted more and more of photo-experiments that seek to pull back the veil on a surprising and profound reality. Although I point my camera at the "mundane" details and "meaningless" twitches of life, the photos reveal just the opposite. This occurs through a creative mode of total experimentation. I combine seemingly random photo techniques with exposure to obscure or mundane subject matters. But when all is finished, a surprise emerges. The mundane, micro, and meaningless are revealed to be beautiful, grand, and purposeful. Nothing is meaningless. And the veil has been removed.
davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08146839745832481751noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011055283047099812.post-535004133424510402013-12-14T01:22:00.003-08:002014-03-12T11:42:22.326-07:00Illustrators' Holiday Show and Art Sale Tonight! ~12/14/13~

Salutations! If you missed my art show last week, here's a little video I shot on a friend's phone such that you can get a glimpse at how the pieces were arranged and which ones were shown. Throughout the video, I read one of the artist statements that I had displayed that night (see below). It truly was a great time. Many, many thanks to the amazing people at City Church for offering their gallery space as an opportunity for artists to show and thus get involved with one of the hottest First Friday art walks in the country!

Hope all's well, and take care. And here's a look at my artist statement from the show:

Works on Paper and Canvas

My watercolor illustrations
on paper combine realistic scenery with imaginative color and fictional
stories. I find that the best fiction
offers not an escape from reality but an unrehearsed confrontation with
it. So, in hopes of drawing the viewer’s
attention back to how brilliant life can actually be, my illustrations seek to blend
the details of reality with the colors and surprise of imagination. Hence, the images represent no escape into a
pretend world. Rather, I’m pointing to a
real brilliance that already surrounds
us, if only we’d look for it.

My canvases arose
from the experience of taking and teaching fine art classes. They stand as an encouragement that students
can, with time, become teachers. More
so, however, they stand as a reminder that the true teacher must always remain
a student at heart. The best teachers
I’ve ever had are the ones that are open to learning from their students, the
ones that see the good in their students’ work, even when no one else does. Without such teachers in my life, I would
never have become the artist I am today.

My own journey as an artist started
when I was very young. Since I could
first hold a pencil, I’ve enjoyed drawing people. I have since expanded my repertoire to
include a few background details, though the human being remains the most
beautiful and captivating subject to me.
Before I went to art school, I couldn’t stand watercolor and using color
in general intimidated me. In college, however,
I gradually discovered that watercolor was a perfect match for my drawing
style, that it would bring my characters to life. I also do other types of artwork, including digital
illustration, fine art photography, music, and graphic design.

I've got another art show coming up! This time I'll be showing somewhere around 20 pieces, works on paper and canvas, new and old. Again, the show will take place in Denver's Santa Fe Art District along the First Friday Art Walk. See these paintings and many more at the FOUND gallery -- that's 800 W 8th Avenue, Suite 112, Denver CO, 80204. The show lasts from 6pm to 9pm this Friday, come rain or shine (or even come snow, I hope, since we have a rather unexpected snow storm forecast for that night!). And the gallery offers some great food and beverages to complement the excellent art-viewing experience. Come hang out, support local artists, enjoy some good conversation and refreshments. See you there!

Among the images pictured above, the top two are rather new and have never been made public until now! They're part of the MMQ series I've been working on, that is, the illustrated collection of short stories called Mary Mary Quite: On Training Up a Child and Other Mind-altering Substances, by Mary Huckstep. Stay tuned for more updates on the book, which we're hoping to release in ebook form by mid-to-late December.

Hope to see you at the show! Bye for now and take care.

Hello, hello. Just wanted to let you know that I'll have some artwork showing in the Santa Fe Art District in Denver this weekend. Every month they do a huge First Friday Art Walk -- it's widely regarding as some of the best free fun to be had in this "creative capital of the West". I'll be showing a few of my old favorites, some rather large paintings that I finished back in 2008. The paintings pictured above will be displayed at an art show called FOUND, at 800 W 8th Avenue, Suite 112, Denver CO, 80204. The event lasts from 6pm to 9pm and will feature some great food and beverages. Come hang out, support local artists, enjoy some good conversation and refreshments. See you there!

Today is the farewell show of a terrific band whom I've had the privilege of getting to know a little bit over the last year-ish. Do check out the bandcamp page of The Stormcellars -- their music has been quite a treat and it will be sad to see them go. Tonight, I'll be cheering my lungs out, clapping my hands flat, and singing my voice happy at The Stormcellars' farewell show. The above poster, originally designed as a sort of creative barter with the hopes of free admission into all future Stormcellars gigs, has morphed into more of a good-bye gift and "thank you" for all the wonderful tunes.

"The Moon and the Manticore" is, I believe, not exactly the act that they'll be performing tonight -- rather, it is a telescopically ambitious folk-rock musical theatre production that the band's lead singer has been envisioning for quite some time. Hopefully, in the future we can all see this prospective masterpiece take the nation coast-to-coast, even traverse the worldwide folk-rock musical theatre scene. Until then, I'm afraid, the above poster may remain somewhat of an elusive teaser... So be it! May it tantalize your creative taste buds with wonder! And, to our great pleasure, may this folk-musical epic be completed long before the year 3013. For the moment, however, I must go get some rest. Launch is in 0400 hours. Bye for now, good night, and good flight!

Here are the final three from an eleven-poem series that I recently illustrated for a friend of mine, musician and poet Brian Stark. From top to bottom, their names are "Entering the Red Line at Chicago," "Picnic Table," and "Walking Home in the Rain" -- click these links if you'd like to see the illustrations in their original contexts, displayed on Brian's poetry blog along with the poems they illustrate.

This last chunk of poetry follows the theme of "City," according to the thematic rhythm of "Nature," "King," and "City." The themes, of course, truly flourish when one reads through the illustrated poems on Brian's blog, something that I would highly encourage. Of all eleven poems, I can't really pick a favorite. I will say though that four of the poems struck me most strongly. These were "Walking Home in the Rain," "Entering the Red Line at Chicago," "Snowfall," and "A Tree is Born." The words, the imagery, and the movement are so beautiful in these poems -- they really impacted me.

I hope you've enjoyed these illustrations and the poems that inspired them! Soon, I'll put up a little post on what my process looks like for this new illustration style. It's something I had been thinking about since roughly 2007, something that only now have I gotten the chance to actualize. It involves digitally inverting the color of my images. I know, isn't that outrageous!? I thought the same thing! *Pensive sigh*. Anyways, can't wait to share. Till then, stay wonderful, (i.e. full of wonder) and have an awesome weekend.

Here's my next installment of poem illustrations that I created in collaboration with friend, long-time fellow creative, and poet Brian Stark. The names of these poems from top to bottom are "Israel Receives Her King," "Jonathan's Eye's Were Opened," "Song Based on a Misreading of 1 Samuel 14," "Reflection on 1 Samuel 6," and "David and the King" -- click the title of whatever poem you'd like to read, displayed with its illustration on Brian's poetry blog.
The theme with these five poems is "King," following the tri-theme contour of "Nature," "King," and "City." There's sort of a logical flow through the respective themes of all eleven poems (starting with the first three poems from last week's post). First, you start with nature, pure and unadulterated. Then, natural forces lead natural humanity to contrive something that will change the face of nature forever: Kingship; Government; Infrastructure. Despite whatever pure and simple motives would undergird the kingship at its outset, there eventually results this unpredictable, flawed, and unwieldy thing called civilized life -- hence the third theme of "city," represented by the last three poems which I'll post later this week. Till then, enjoy the artwork and have a good one!
